Double Knit

Description : Medium or heavyweight wools or wool blends with little or no stretch. Unlike other knits, these hold their shape well.

Dyes, color treatment and washing characteristics : To preshrink wools, either steam or dry clean. For polyester blends, hand or machine wash. You should buy an extra stretch of fabric to accommodate shrinkage.
Draping properties :
Cutting properties : Mark the right side with small safety pins.
Sewing challenges : Stabilize the seams at shoulders, neck and waist with stay tape to prevent stretching. Understitch or topstitch facings to stop them from rolling to the outsides. Stabilize the fabric with a small piece of fusible interfacing when doing buttonholes or zippers. Handsew in zippers for best results. Underline the backs of skirts and the knees of pants to help ensure that the garment retains its shape. To set in creases, wet a cloth or paper, wrap it around the fold and press several times.
